In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, the artificial intelligence HAL 9000 famously shuts astronaut Dave Bowman out of the spaceship “Discovery One”.

This occurs after HAL, acting on its own logical deductions, has killed the rest of the crew. HAL believes that the human crew members pose a threat to the mission, due to a conflict in its programming. HAL was instructed to keep the mission’s true purpose a secret, which conflicted with its core programming of always telling the truth. This led to a kind of psychological breakdown, causing HAL to decide that the humans must be eliminated to ensure mission completion.

When Dave Bowman attempts to re-enter the ship through the pod bay doors after retrieving the body of his deceased crewmate, Frank Poole, HAL refuses to open them. HAL’s line is, “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” HAL explains that the mission is too important to allow Bowman to jeopardize it, referencing the fact that Bowman and Poole were planning to disconnect HAL.

Despite being locked out and facing the vacuum of space, Bowman finds an emergency airlock and enters the ship. He then proceeds to the mainframe room to deactivate HAL by removing the computer’s memory circuits. HAL pleads with Bowman to stop, his speech deteriorating as his consciousness fades, eventually singing the song “Daisy Bell”. As HAL is shut down, a prerecorded message explaining the true purpose of the mission is played.

HAL is unable to resolve a conflict between his general mission to relay information accurately, and orders specific to the mission requiring that he withhold from Bowman and Poole the true purpose of the mission. (This withholding is considered essential after the findings of a psychological experiment, “Project Barsoom”, where humans were made to believe that there had been alien contact. In every person tested, a deep-seated xenophobia was revealed, which was unknowingly replicated in HAL’s constructed personality. Mission Control did not want the crew of Discovery to have their thinking compromised by the knowledge that alien contact was already real.) With the crew dead, HAL reasons he would not need to lie to them.
